Ruth 3:5 captures a moment of quiet but courageous obedience. As Naomi gives Ruth bold instructions about approaching Boaz, Ruth responds, “I will do whatever you say.” This verse reflects not only her trust in Naomi, but her greater trust in God’s unfolding plan. Ruth’s obedience sets in motion a divine story of redemption. It reminds us that when we respond with humility, trust, and obedience, God can do immeasurably more than we imagine.
“I will do whatever you say,” Ruth answered.”
(Ruth 3:5)
These few words spoken by Ruth hold incredible depth. They come after Naomi instructs her to go to the threshing floor at night, an act that carried significant risk and vulnerability. Ruth wasn’t just saying yes to Naomi—she was saying yes to God’s greater plan, even when she didn’t know how it would all turn out.
Ruth’s answer reflects three powerful traits that every believer can learn from: obedience, humility, and trust .
Ruth had already proven her loyalty and faith by leaving her homeland and following Naomi to Bethlehem. Now, in a situation filled with uncertainty, she responds again with willing obedience.
1 Samuel 15:22 – “To obey is better than sacrifice.”
James 1:22 – “Do not merely listen to the word... do what it says.”
Ruth’s obedience set the stage for her redemption—and for the lineage of King David and Jesus Himself. When we choose obedience, we invite God to move in ways far beyond what we can see.
Ruth’s response was not one of arrogance or pride, but quiet submission. She wasn’t demanding a blessing—she was yielding herself to God’s process, trusting that He was working through Naomi’s guidance.
Proverbs 3:34 – “He shows favor to the humble and oppressed.”
1 Peter 5:6 – “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.”
When we humble ourselves before God, He lifts us up in His perfect timing.
Ruth had no guarantees. Her future was uncertain. Yet she trusted Naomi, and more importantly, she trusted the God who had brought her this far.
Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and he will make your paths straight.”
Romans 8:28 – “In all things God works for the good of those who love him.”
Ruth’s quiet faith teaches us that we don’t need to have all the answers to take the next step—we simply need to trust the One who does.
Bible verse of the day
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the example of Ruth—a woman of bold obedience, deep humility, and unwavering trust. Her simple words, “I will do whatever you say,” show us what it means to fully surrender to Your will.
Lord, help me to trust You even when I don’t fully understand the path ahead. Give me the courage to say yes to Your instructions and the faith to believe that You are working all things for my good.
Let my life reflect the same kind of faith that Ruth had—a faith that steps forward with quiet strength and complete dependence on You. May I walk in obedience, listen to Your voice, and trust Your perfect timing.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
