“Look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said.”
(Judges 6:37)

"Faith That Asks: Trusting God Through the Test"

Judges 6:37 captures a pivotal moment in Gideon's journey of faith. Though God had called him to lead Israel against the Midianites, Gideon sought confirmation through a sign involving a fleece and dew. Rather than rebuking Gideon for his request, God responded with patience and affirmation. This verse encourages us that God understands our need for reassurance and meets us where we are. Faith isn’t about having all the answers—it's about seeking God, even in uncertainty.

Meditation

“Look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said.”
(Judges 6:37)

Gideon’s story is one of transformation—from fear to faith, from doubt to deliverance. Called to rescue Israel from the oppressive Midianites, Gideon didn’t respond with immediate confidence. He needed reassurance. And so, he asked God for a sign.

His request might seem like a lack of faith, but in reality, it was an honest conversation with God from a place of weakness and dependency .

1. God Welcomes Honest Doubt

Gideon didn't hide his fear. He admitted he needed clarity. And God didn’t scold him—He responded.

  • James 1:5“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God... and it will be given to you.”

  • Psalm 103:14“For he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.”

God knows we’re human. He meets us in our uncertainty and invites us to ask, seek, and knock. Faith isn’t the absence of questions—it’s bringing our questions to God.

2. Faith Often Grows in Steps

Gideon didn't start off as a fearless warrior. His faith grew in stages—through divine encounters, answered signs, and obedience.

Sometimes we think we must have unwavering faith from the beginning, but even spiritual heroes like Gideon grew into their calling .

  • Mark 9:24“I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

If you’re struggling to believe or wondering if God really called you— you’re not alone . Keep stepping forward. He will guide and confirm the way.

3. God Is Not Offended by Our Need for Reassurance

The sign of the fleece wasn’t a test of God’s ability—it was a cry for confirmation. Gideon wanted to make sure he wasn’t moving ahead in his own strength.

We too can ask God for peace, direction, or clarity. It’s not a sign of weakness—it’s a posture of dependence.

  • Proverbs 3:5-6“Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and he will make your paths straight.”

  • Philippians 4:6-7“Do not be anxious about anything… and the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds.”

Don’t be afraid to bring your fears to God. He’s big enough to handle your doubts and loving enough to reassure you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being patient with me when I question, hesitate, or feel unsure. Just like Gideon, I sometimes need reassurance. I’m thankful that You meet me in my weakness, that You hear my prayers, and that You don’t condemn my need for guidance.

Lord, grow my faith step by step. Help me trust Your voice and move forward in obedience, even when I don’t see the whole picture. Give me peace when I ask, wisdom when I seek, and clarity when I knock.

Help me to know that You are with me, guiding me, and equipping me for every task You’ve called me to. Let my heart remain open, my spirit teachable, and my faith anchored in You.

In Jesus' name,
Amen.
